A steering wheel puller is used to separate a steering wheel from the splined steering column shaft without damaging the vehicle's column, clockspring, or interior trim.
Because steering wheels are pressed tightly onto tapered splines and locked with a high-torque center nut, pulling on the wheel by hand can bend the wheel frame or pull the entire steering shaft assembly out of alignment. This puller bridges across the hub of the wheel, using a central forcing screw to apply smooth, linear pressure to draw the wheel straight off.
