A pitman arm puller is designed to separate the steering pitman arm from the steering gear box sector shaft. Because pitman arms are pressed onto tapered splines and subjected to years of road debris, they regularly rust-fuse in place. A pitman arm puller features a heavy, rigid C-shaped jaw yoke that slips behind the arm, allowing a central forcing screw to press down against the sector shaft to break the friction seal safely without destroying the steering box internal bearings.
