A thread chaser restorer (or rethreading tool) is designed to reform, align, and clean existing threads on bolts, studs, and taped engine holes. Unlike a standard sharp tap and die set which cuts away raw metal to form brand new threads, thread chasers utilize a less aggressive, highly tempered geometry. They smoothly push displaced or squashed metal back into its original shape while scouring out rust, old thread-locker compounds, carbon deposits, and dirt without undercutting or weakening the original fastener dimensions.
