A timing light is used on classic or older vehicles equipped with mechanical ignition distributors. It functions as a stroboscopic light that flashes in perfect synchronization with the firing of the number-one cylinder's spark plug.
By pointing the flashing light at the engine's rotating crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer), the timing marks appear to stand completely frozen in mid-air. This allows a mechanic to see the exact degrees of ignition timing relative to Top Dead Center (TDC) and adjust it by physically rotating the distributor housing.
