A ridge reamer is used to shave down the hard ridge of carbon and un-worn metal that forms at the very top of a cylinder bore. As an engine runs over hundreds of thousands of miles, the scraping action of the piston rings wears away the cylinder walls, but because the rings never travel all the way to the top of the cylinder block, a distinct ledge or "ridge" is left behind at the peak of the stroke.
You must use a ridge reamer to cut this ledge flush with the rest of the cylinder bore before you attempt to push the pistons out of the block during a teardown. If you try to force a piston upward past a heavy ridge, the top piston ring will slam into the metal ledge, instantly shattering the ring, fracturing the aluminum piston lands, or scoring the cylinder walls.
